Tucson’s month-long celebration in honor of its 231st birthday continues, with events leading up to the actual date, Aug. 20:

• Life in El Presidio, Tony Urias, of Celebrando del Pueblo de Tucson, presents a living history of a soldier’s life in El Presidio de Tucson.

Friday (Aug. 18)
• Flag Raising, the Tucson-Pima County Historical Commission and costumed members of the Tucson Presidio Trust commemorate Tucson’s founding in 1775 by raising the four flags that have flown over Tucson. The ceremony will be followed by birthday cake and music by Bobby Benton. 8 a.m. at The Old Courthouse, 115 N. Church Ave. (Free)
• Reception at El Centro Cultural de Las Americas, featuring Orquesta Clásica from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Historic Brown House, 40 W. Broadway. (Free)
Saturday (Aug. 19)
•Tour the Mission Garden, is a tour of what’s proposed as the future heart of Rio Nuevo. 8 a.m., meet at the corner of South Grande Avenue and Mission Lane (under the “A” of A Mountain). (Free)
•Twilight Walking Tour of the Presidio, has costumed members of the Tucson Presidio Trust offering a tour of the original Presidio’s perimeter and its history. A no-host fiesta follows at Old Town Artisans. 6:30 p.m. starts at The Old Courthouse, 115 N. Church Ave. (Free for the tour). No-host fiesta at Old Town Artisans, 201 N. Court Ave.
•Birthday on Broadway, the Arizona Youth Chamber Ensemble presents “The Lights Of Broadway” featuring show tunes. 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall at Pima Community College West Campus Center for the Arts, 2202 W. Anklam Road. ($10; contact (520) 991-1651)
Sunday (Aug. 20) - Tucson’s Birthday
•Pima Air and Space Museum is offering free admission to any Tucson resident and a guest with proof of residency such as a driver’s license of utility bill. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (museum stays open until 5 p.m.), 6000 E. Valencia Road. (Free)
• Birthday babies, Tucson Medical Center will give each baby born on this date a commemorative medallion and a certificate featuring a reproduction of the Presidio proclamation. For every child born at St. Joseph’s Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital, the Sonoran Institute will sponsor a saguaro through Friends of Saguaro National Park. The families of all babies born on the date will receive a certificate from Tucson Clean and Beautiful and Trees for Tucson offering a free native tree to be planted at their home.
• Make a birthday card for your home town. Noon to 5 p.m., Tucson Children’s Museum, 200 S. 6th Ave. (Free)
• Birthday cake, a cake big enough to serve more than 231 people. Noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Hotel Congress, 311 E. Congress St. (Free)
•“Tucson Through the Lens,” an exhibition of Tucson photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Leo Goldschmidt, including photos of San Xavier Mission after the earthquake. 1:30 p.m., with exhibition continuing daily from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. through Aug. 26, at the Jewish Heritage Center (Stone Avenue Temple), 564 S.
