In his first speech since being chosen president of the state Senate, Tim Bee said it’s time for the legislature to look beyond Maricopa County to address the issues of importance to Southern Arizona.

Republican Bee, who Nov. 7 won re-election to his District 30 seat with more votes than any other senator in the state, offered his insights into what is ahead for the legislature at the Nov. 14 meeting of the Arizona Builders’ Alliance.

The opportunity to lead the Senate “is a big one, and I’m going to be aggressive about using it to make sure this area gets the attention it deserves,” he said.

Bee said he will be focusing attention on important transportation, education and water issues.

“We had a really successful session, last year,” that allowed the legislature to provide $2 million to support trauma care at University Medical Center, make progress on tax reform and give Tucson expanded tax increment funding for downtown redevelopment, as well as replenish the state’s rainy day fund.

For 2007, there’s likely to be more work on tax reform and greater emphasis on infrastructure improvements.

“It’s going to be more difficult because we lost Toni Hellon, who was significant force in the Republican Party for Southern Arizona, but we’ll be able to do it,” he told the group.

Bee called on the construction industry to make their needs known saying “It’s time to speak out, because I want you to know that I’m listening.”
