Battery innovator Sion is expanding operations

Sion Power, a developer of “next generation” high-energy lithium sulfur rechargeable batteries, says it is moving to a new facility near Tucson International Airport that will nearly double its size to 67,000 square feet.

The company announced Aug. 2 it is moving from the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park to 2900 E. Elvira Road as part of its plans to expand research and development.

“This expansion underscores the long term commitment of our investors and will accelerate the development and commercialization of our Li-S battery technology,” CEO Dennis Mangino said in a statement.

Two key markets for the Li-S battery technology are military portable power and electric vehicles.

Sion Power said it will spend $15 million on the expansion and relocation, which should be completed by January. The company said it has  has 50 employees, including eight Ph.D.s, and is adding more scientists and engineers.
