Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup has declared Oct. 13-21 to be Architecture Week 2007, to educate, entertain and raise public awareness and appreciation for architecture.

Architecture Week is presented annually by the American Institute of Architects - Southern Arizona Chapter (AIA-SAC).

The theme for this year’s celebration is "Growing Beyond Green," in harmony with the growing awareness of the role of architects in creating a sustainable and livable environment.

The celebration will be broken into several events throughout the course of the week.

Some events start before the weekend.

View architects’ work

Exhibits of recent works of 24 architects is on display this week through Saturday in Foothills Mall, 7401 N. La Cholla Blvd., in the Saks Court at the south end of the mall. Then Oct. 14 - 21, they will be at Park Place, 5870 E. Broadway, at the east end of the mall between Sears and Borders.

Architects of tomorrow

Architects must create models for the planned new Tucson Children’s Museum near downtown using only toothpicks, business cards and glue. At least that is what the middle school students participating in Kidstruction, a student design/build contest will do.

The categories for the models are: Tucson Children’s Museum, Construction/Building Space Exhibit, Resourceful Water Exhibit, Green Growing Garden Space, Renewable Energy Exhibit and Rain Forest Exhibit.

Teams of students will design and assemble their models. They will be judged by members of the design and construction industries from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 13, with an awards ceremony to follow from 11:30 a.m. to noon. The exhibits will be on display Oct. 13 - 21 in the Saks Court at Foothills Mall.

First, second, and third place cash prizes will be awarded for each of the six categories in addition to prize ribbons. First place will receive $100 dollars, second place will receive $75 dollars and third place will receive $50 dollars.

All winning projects will then be displayed Oct. 22 - Nov. 17 at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library, 101 N. Stone Ave., and Dec. 10 - 20 at the Children’s Museum, 200 S. Sixth Ave.

2007 design awards

The fourth annual Saturday Night Design Awards will be held Oct. 20 on the patio of the Mountain Oyster Club, 6400 E. El Dorado Circle. The awards recognize local architects for design excellence and celebrates Architecture Week.
