Make room for more coffee table space: Southern Arizona has two new glossy magazines, 520 Living and Luxe.

Both are quarterly publications but from different publishers.

520 Living comes from DollarWorks Publishing in Oro Valley which also puts out Shop Smart, a direct-mail publication that is entirely different.

The title obviously comes from the telephone area code and publisher Larry Stinson says that’s what his magazine intends to cover.

"We cover home, dining, recreation, travel, community, health and shopping targeting a demographic of 35 to 55," he said. "The thing that makes us different is that there’s no other lifestyle magazine that does that for the entire Southern Arizona region. There are lots of small towns that are neglected. People there are tired of reading only about what goes on in Tucson and Phoenix."

The inaugural Spring 2008 issue, which was published Feb. 1, includes articles on the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association’s recently concluded Parade of Homes in Marana, a look at romantic getaways tied to Valentine’s Day, an article on Cochise’s Stronghold in Dragoon and a report on charter schools.

"We’ll have the kind of stuff you usually associate with a lifestyle magazine but in each issue we will have something with a little bit more substance," Stinson said, citing the charter school story.

The inaugural issue had 30,000 copies. It’s available by subscription, for $18.50 per year, or free at 350 distribution points throughout Southern Arizona, including bookstores, chambers of commerce and other newstands. Stinson said copies are also placed in hotel rooms.

Despite the tough economic times, Stinson is undaunted.

"We’ve started other publications during the toughest times and they’ve all survived and are doing quite well," he said. "I think if you do that, it makes you stay more focused."

Stinson, who has lived in the Tucson for 10 years, said his sister is publishing two similar magazines in Southern California cover the 661 and 805 area codes. If the magazine hits, there’s no doubt where he’s headed. Stinson has registered the magazine names for the area codes in Arizona, New Mexico and Las Vegas.

Ironically, despite the name a check of the magazine’s website - http://www.520LivingMagazine.com - or the masthead of its current issue doesn’t list a phone number. But Stinson said that’s coming.

Although nobody called me back, Luxe Magazine looks to be taking its cues from Architectural Digest, showcasing luxury residential architecture, design, interiors and products. It’s published by Sandow Media, headquartered in Boca Raton, Fla., with regional editions for South Florida, Chicago area, Colorado, Texas, Southern California and now Arizona.

Although the website - http://www.luxemagazine.com/ - has information pertaining to Arizona and Tucson, it doesn’t appear as if an edition of the magazine has actually been published. Subscription rates for other regional publications show it as $6.95 a copy at newstands and in bookstores. One-year, four-copy subscriptions cost $19.95 with discounts for two- and three-year subscriptions.

 Names in news

One of the good guys in the broadcast business could be coming back to Tucson. Ray Depa, who was KGUN 9’s general manager until he quit in April 2006, says he’s thinking about returning after parting ways as general manager this month from a station in Huntsville, Ala. Depa says he and his wife Alta still own a home here. "I am still ‘years’ from retirement and would like to find something that would utilize my 40 years of media experience," Depa says.

Sadly, Rich Heatley, long-time chief engineer who put Channel 11 on the air in 1967, died last week. The TV station, now known as Fox 11, KMSB, originally had the call letters KZAZ and operated as an independent station licensed to Nogales. Heatley also worked for local radio stations and owned an FM station in Nogales. Heatley had been living in Oregon. A memorial service is planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 27) at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2331 E. Adams St.
