That smoke you might see coming from Fire Restaurant Bar and Grill - opened only for about a month, so far - isn’t coming from the grill but what remains of a short-lived but much-hyped relationship between the restaurant’s owners and the chef Jason Jonilonis.

Jonilonis departed the Dove Mountain restaurant last week. What may be even more striking than his quick exit is that Jonilonis was the restaurant’s second executive chef. Their first chef, Denis Johnston, left before the restaurant opened.

Fire is owned by a group of San Diego police officers. When he was hired - after chef positions at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, Hacienda del Sol and Westward Look - Jonilonis was referred to as one of five "partners" in Fire.

A man who answered the phone at the restaurant last week said Jonilonis "was bought out" because he wanted to go off and do other things.

In an ironic bit of timing after he had left, the Arizona Daily Star on March 19 carried a glowing review of Fire, focusing mostly on Jonilonis’ abilities.

Two restaurants each celebrating a decade

Two restaurants are each celebrating a decade of dining in Tucson.

From March 31 to April 6 Pastiche will be bringing out some "old menu items that haven’t been available for years and favorites" as owner Pat Connors invites customers to reminisce about the past 10 years. As part of the special, they’re offering $1 pieces of birthday cake.

And Wildflower, the restaurant that was the foundation for Sam Fox’s chain that is now up to 23 locations in three states is 10 years old. When it opened Wildflower quickly established itself for its contemporary ambience and innovative New American food. That contemporary ambience is due for facelift later this summer when the restaurant is planning to close for a week.
