Fourteen neurology specialists have opened an $8 million freestanding medical center they say offers a unique combination of professional elements as well as technology not duplicated elsewhere in Tucson.

The 30,000 square-foot Center for Neurosciences, 2450 E. River Road, was designed specifically to be a patient-friendly haven, said Dr. Abhay Sanan, president.

For example, the facility features contemporary original art throughout the building created by local artists, a spacious master waiting room with a soothing 20-foot-long waterfall and an outdoor patio play area for young patients.

"The design concept for the project is that of an oasis—a building surrounded by trees and gardens to create a beautiful, tranquil environment for patients, doctors and staff," said Clayton R. Joyce, building architect.

The new center, touted as "Tucson’s most comprehensive and integrated system of neurological care in a single location," includes specialists from the entire neuroscience service line, Dr. Sanan said. It has 30 examination rooms, six treatment rooms for EEG and EMG exams, a radiology suite for MRI exams and offices for each physician.

The practice includes six neurosurgeons, four adult neurologists, three pediatric neurologists and Tucson’s only neuro-oncologist. These specialists previously were practicing in five separate locations. In addition there are three nurse practitioners and two physician assistants.

"We want to serve as primary first-line resource for patients with any kind of neurological problem," Dr. Sanan said, adding that the center hopes to attract patients from throughout the state and New Mexico who have diseases of the brain, spine, spinal cord and peripheral nerves..

"We are comprehensive with respect to the entire neuroscience service line," Dr. Sanan said, adding that four of the center’s physicians represent specialties that can’t be found anywhere else in Tucson—the pediatric neurologists and the neuro-oncologist, who primarily treats brain tumors.

The center’s six neurosurgeons don’t perform surgery at the center, but enjoy relationships with all of Tucson’s major hospitals. In addition, Dr. Sanan said the center accepts virtually all insurance plans, including Medicare and Access plans.

Future plans — possibly as soon as 2010 — are to construct another 10,000 square feet specifically for participation in clinical research trials with drug and medical technology companies. Sanan said many of the doctors are already involved in research.
