Increased purchases of air-defense missiles and other combat gear by the United States government and its allies helped propel Raytheon’s first-quarter profit up 23 percent to $400 million on sales that were up 11 percent to $5.35 billion.
Raytheon Missile Systems, headquartered in Tucson, landed a $1 billion Standard Missile-3 order from Japan in February as well as increased purchases of Patriot air-defense systems from South Korea and Taiwan.

The missile systems group, Raytheon’s largest, saw sales increase to $1.31 billion, from $1.14 billion. Operating profit rose 14 percent to $137 million.
