Seeking Up & Comers,
honoring Women of Influence

Published on Friday, May 09, 2008

So much to do, so little time.

I’m beginning to think the two busiest times of the year for us in Tucson are the months of April going into early May and October going into early November. Weather-wise these are some of the best times of the year. But how much can we enjoy it?

It seems like there is a walk, run or bicycle event every weekend in October and early November. This time of the year, the rush is on to hold special events in what little time we have between when winter visitors leave and many of the rest of us start to think about escaping the summer heat.

This year, we at Inside Tucson Business are doubling our workload.

This week we’re launching our seventh annual effort to seek out nominees to honor as Up & Comers. You’ll find a nomination form on our website – www.azbiz.com – and on page 13 of this edition of the printed Inside Tucson Business.

Think about a person you know and interact with each day who is an Up & Comer in our region.

Up & Comers are young professionals in the 20s, 30s or 40s who, while still early on their career paths, are already making significant contributions. In some cases, they’re taking the extra step in their areas of expertise, or doing something totally outside their line of work. They’re rising stars destined to be the movers and shakers of this region.

You know somebody we should honor. I know you do. Please tell us about that person. Fill out the nomination form, either online or in print, and send it in. The deadline is May 20. From your nominations, we’ll honor nine Up & Comers in a special section to be published in the June 9 issue.

Women of Influence breakfast

Coming up May 8 is Inside Tucson Business’s annual Women of Influence breakfast. This year it will be at the Marriott University Park Hotel, 880 E. Second St.

In addition to meeting and celebrating this year’s honorees, we’ve assembled a women’s executive panel.

Our panelists this year are Alejandra Dreisbach, a consultant and lecturer who has done some remarkable work with executives in foreign countries; Mary Kamerzell, superintendent of Catalina Foothills School District; Lola Kates, a businesswoman and this year’s president of the Tucson chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners; and Carol Zimmerman, of Zimmerman & Associates advertising and public relations.

The emcee is Matt Russell of Russell Public Communications.

Tickets for the breakfast are $40 each. For more information contact April Duron at aduron@azbiz.com or (520) 295-4244.

The Women of Influence breakfast is one of the most inspiring events we do. I can’t think of much else I would rather do than sharing time with such people.

E-mail comments for publication to editor@azbiz.com. Contact David Hatfield at dhatfield@azbiz.com or (520) 295-4237.
