Compared to other states, Arizonans shoulder the 10th lightest tax burden on a per capita basis, according to the Tax Foundation, a Washington, D.C., a nonprofit tax research organization.
The foundation computed its findings using the combined state and local taxes for each state and the District of Columbia for the fiscal year ending June 30.

Ranked No. 41, Arizonans paid $3,244 per capita in 2008, down $64 from 2007 when the state was ranked No. 40. On a per capita basis, Arizonans paid 8.5 percent of their income on taxes in 2008.
The report doesn’t take into account differences in tax burden by jurisdictions within a state or residential versus business.
The average U.S. tax burden is 9.7 percent of per capita income. New Jersey taxpayers had the highest burden, 11.8 percent, followed by New York at 11.7 percent. Alaska has the lowest burden, 6.4 percent.
