Tucson can add another big notch in its solar- power belt.

Solon AG, one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of solar modules, which just ventured into Tucson about 1½ years ago opening a small, 300 square-foot office at 2700 E. Executive Drive near Tucson International Airport, this week is ready to gear up its manufacturing operations as it opens a 110,000 square-foot facility at 6950 S. Country Club Road.

The company has begun production of solar panels and expects to move the corporate offices into the new building next month.

At capacity, the new building will be producing 80 megawatts which is equal to 250,000 solar panels per year.

In addition to the production of solar modules, Solon will offer installation and ancillary services for photovoltaic systems and solar power stations to customers in commerce, industry and the public sector throughout the country.

Solon’s main customer base consists of municipalities and large scale utilities. Although the company did design and install the solar field that will power a portion of Global Solar Energy’s building on South Rita Road.

By the end of this year Solon expects to employ 150 people and by the end of next year plans to be up to 200 employees, according to president and CEO Olaf Koester.

"We are excited and believe there are great opportunities to grow," he said.

The company is holding a grand opening Friday (Oct. 17).

" One of the reasons Solon is here (along with two, soon three, of their German suppliers) is because Tucson has an international school offering a German program at German standards. "
