Sparse turnout hears
of youth sports proposal

Published on Friday, October 10, 2008

Judging by the first public forum concerning the Chicago White Sox’s proposal to bring a year-round youth baseball tournament to Tucson as a substitute for the team getting out of its spring training agreement, it can be said that youth baseball fans like the idea.

Otherwise, very few others spoke up among the approximately 150 people who showed up Oct. 7 at the Leo Rich Theatre at the Tucson Convention Center.

Tom Tracy, president of the Pima County Sports and Tourism Authority, said the comments would be taken back to the county.

There were no comments regarding the fact that the plan could doom the future of spring training in Tucson because it would allow the last two remaining teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies, to leave. Members of the authority closed the meeting saying it’s important that the Tucson area keep spring traning.
