BIOTECHNOLOGY
ImaRx sells off drug inventory to raise money
Financially struggling ImaRx Therapeutics Inc., 1635 E. 18th St., sold off its inventory of the anti-clotting drug urokinase to Microbix Biosystems Inc., in Toronto, Ontario.
Microbix made an upfront payment of $2 million for the urokinase inventory, regulatory and related assets and will assume $500,000 in liabilities for product already in the market. Microbix will make an additional $2.5 million payment once the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves and releases three more lots of urokinase.
A deal announced in May to sell the urokinase inventory to Microbix for $17 million fell through after the Canadian company expressed concern that the FDA was asking for more testing of the drug. After the deal fell through, ImaRx laid off 17 of its 20 employees.
ImaRx says it will use the money from the sale to fund its operations and evaluates the future development of its proprietary microbubble and ultrasound technology, SonoLysis.
ImaRx is also facing delisting of its stock on the Nasdaq for several reasons, including the fact that its shares have not traded above $1 per share for at least 10 consecutive days since March 8.
GOVERNMENT
IRS relaxes overseas corporate loan rule
In the midst of the now international financial crisis, the Internal Revenue Service is offering some relief by temporarily relaxing a rule to make it easier for U.S. corporations to bring home money made by their foreign subsidiaries.
The revision gives companies up to six months to pay back loans on money borrowed from foreign subsidiaries without having to pay the 35 percent corporate income tax. The previous time limit was 60 days to pay back such loans.
The IRS said the money cannot be used for dividends or other shareholder distributions.
