Awards, honors, and recognitions

Brent M. Borchers with the Terracon Tucson office was awarded the Tonopah Award for Outstanding Service to the Arizona Society of Civil Engineers by a Younger Member.  This award is presented annually to a Member of the ASCE who is judged to have provided outstanding service to the Arizona Society.

The Univeristy of Arizona College of Education had two professors receive professorships. Jeffrey Milem, professor in the Center for the Study of Higher Education who also serves as associate dean of education, is the recipient of The Ernest W. McFarland Distinguished Professorship in Leadership for Education Policy and Reform. Patricia L. Anders, professor in the Department of Language, Reading, and Culture, is the recipient of the Jewell M. Lewis Distinguished Professorship in Reading.

Wanda Ronquillo of IBM Corporation will receive the Junipero Serra Award for her outstanding contributions to the fields of engineering and science, including management, administration and education. A software engineer and manager of IBM’s tape drive and automation division, Ronquillo wrote serviceability software that 12 years later is still in use.

Elections

Handi-Dogs, Inc. has elected two new members to its board and selected a new chairperson. Those elected to the board are: Paul Loucks and Beverly Downey. The new chair of the board is Angela Cordero.

New Hires

Buzz Dempsey joined NOVA Home Loans as a senior loan officer at the River Road office. Dempsey has more than 25 years experience in the mortgage industry. Prior to joining NOVA Home Loans, he served as branch manager at National City Mortgage for13 years and branch manager at Accubanc Mortgage for 11 years.

John Dougherty, board-certified in both internal medicine and geriatric medicine, joined the SaddleBrooke office of Northwest Allied Physicians.  Dougherty is a member of the medical staff at Northwest Medical Center Oro Valley.  He is also a member of the American Medical Association and the American Geriatrics Society. 

Bruce Martin joined estate planning and elder law firm Bogutz & Gordon as an attorney. Martin will work with clients on estate and trust administration, guardian and conservatorships, as well as fiduciary and care management services. Martin brings more than 11 years of experience practicing law. Prior to joining the firm, he worked with the University of Arizona Foundation as associate director of planned giving and in his own private practice, where he specialized in wills, trusts, probates and taxation issues.

Nhu Tien “Patti” Lu joined the YWCA as program and communication specialist. She will work with the Racial Justice Program, the Girls’ Program, and Women’s Economic Advancement, and additionally coordinates external communications.

Michael Rohde joined Sunstreet Mortgage LLC as a senior loan officer focusing on residential home loans and first time home buyers. Rohde was previously with GMAC Mortgage as a loan officer and has been in the loan origination industry for over 13 years. 

Mariana Vazquez joined the UA Steele Children’s Research Center as special events coordinator. Vazquez will provide support and guidance to the volunteers and event organizers. She will also will oversee the creation of materials in support of special events and community outreach, and give tours of the Steele Center.

Laura Hopkins is the new annual giving coordinator at the UA Steele Children’s Research Center. Hopkins was previously with CarePages Inc. and The Make-A-Wish-Foundation. She has worked for more than seven years in the healthcare and non-profit fields.
