Circuit City announced Monday (Nov. 3) that it would be closing 155 stores, including all 13 locations in the Phoenix market. The two Tucson locations of the electronic retailer are to remain open.

The company has decided to keep the remaining 566 stores open in an effort to liquidate assets and restructure operations to avoid going into bankruptcy. Circuit City also plans to renegotiate leases and cut back on opening new stores.

“We evaluated our stores…and elected to close those that were underperforming or were no longer a strategic fit for the company,” Clarke said.

Going into the holiday season, there is little chance for stores on the chopping block to remain open if they happen to outperform expectations.

“It’s pretty much cut and dried at this point,” said Investor Relations Spokeswoman Jessica Clarke, who added that the Tucson locations were performing to the company’s standards, saving them from closure.

Although the Phoenix stores won’t close their doors immediately, the locations in the central Arizona area have been taken off the company’s website the morning of the announcement.

Georgia, California, Illinois and Ohio are also seeing wide store closings.

Circuit City has locations at Broadway and Craycroft Road and at Oracle and Wetmore roads.

" I agree with the previous comments. If Circuit City wants to stay open and compete with Best Buy they need to go all out with customer service. Something they are poorly lacking. "

" I can vouch for the service at circuit city. IF it wasn't for the fact that I knew exactly what I wanted, and they just happened to have that item on sale, I never would have bought anything there. Despite being happy with my product, I can say I will most likely never browse around there again! "

" These stores deserve to be closed. You can walk around for 30 minutes and no one will even greet you. And while they're at it, close down the Sprint store at Williams Centre. Talk about a crew that couldn't give a ...! "
