So much for voter enthusiasm

For all the talk of how the energy and excitement of this year’s election was supposed to lead to record voter turnout, that wasn’t the case in Pima County, where just under 65 percent of registered voters cast ballots. Four years ago, the turnout was 82.4 percent.

In fact four years ago John Kerry received more votes (193,128) than Barack Obama (167,315) did this year. But then so did George Bush (171,109) over John McCain (147,977). The split was about the same 52.2 percent to 46.2 percent this year versus 52.5 percent to 46.6 percent four years ago.

Maybe it was good intentions. This year there were 498,777 registered voters in Pima County. That’s more than 50,000 new registered voters, an 11 percent increase over four years ago.

Gov. Jan Brewer?

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano was tapped Nov. 5 to be part of president-elect Barack Obama’s transition team as he prepares to take office and that has fueled speculation as to what more might be in store for the Arizonan who was an early and ardent supporter of Obama.

For her part, Napolitano has been circumspect. Some of her closest advisers insist she hasn’t told them anything more. Some even say they wouldn’t be surprised to see her fill out the remaining two years of her governor’s term.

Among the more often speculated potential posts for Napolitano in an Obama administration are U.S. attorney general (she was Arizona’s attorney general before governor), secretary of Homeland Security or secretary of Education.

If she leaves the governor’s office, Secretary of State Jan Brewer, a Republican, would become governor.
