Three places to watch UA-ASU game: Arizona Stadium, ESPN, Fox Sports

For what’s on the line for the University of Arizona Wildcats this year, there’s no better place to see their football rivalry game against Arizona State University than at Arizona Stadium Dec. 6 but if that doesn’t work out, you’ll have two choices to watch it on TV.

ESPN has selected the 6 p.m. game for a national telecast on either ESPN or ESPN2 — which one will be decided Dec. 1. Fox Sports Net Arizona will also show the game. Neither telecast will be blacked out in Arizona.

While ESPN was still putting together its plans, Brett Hansen, director of communications and marketing at Fox Sports Net, said his network’s coverage would be called by Dave Sitton and Lincoln Kennedy with Sean Mooney on the UA sideline and Jody Jackson on the ASU sideline. Fox will start its telecast at 5:30 p.m. with a pre-game show and will also have a post-game show. Both will be hosted by Brad Steinke with Glenn Parker and Juan Roque.

For the game itself there will be some shared camera positions but both Fox and ESPN will have their own separate cameras and production crews on site. Hansen said Fox was working out the details for its telecast to be in high definition.

Goings on at Journal

There’s lots of activity at Journal Broadcast Group’s Tucson operations as its two TV stations and four radio stations all get cozy under one roof. The business office and advertising departments of the radio stations have now moved in with TV stations KGUN and KWBA at 7280 E. Rosewood St. That leaves  only radio operations yet to be moved. That’s supposed to happen sometime in December.

Now that things are coming together, Journal announced last week it will use its newly-assembled strength to create media campaigns for nonprofits. Starting in January, a different nonprofit will be selected each month for the effort that will contribute $1.5 million a year in media exposure.

Heading up the effort is Bobby Rich, host of Mix-FM’s morning show, who now also has the title of community partnerships. Application details for nonprofits are posted online at all the websites of Journal’s stations, including www.mixfm.com.

The Journal Broadcast Group in Tucson is made up of ABC-affiliate KGUN 9, CW-affiliate KWBA 58/cable 8, Mix-FM KMXZ 94.9-FM, the Truth KQTH 104.1-FM, Mega Oldies KGMG 106.3-FM/104.9-FM and ESPN The Fan KFFN 1490-AM.

On the subject of Journal, and Mix-FM in particular, will anybody be surprised if they wake up the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas music? The station always likes to keep the move a secret but it has happened for at least four years by my count.

Call for Addys

For the people who create advertising, there’s a chance for more fame by entering the Tucson Advertising Federation’s 28th annual Addy Awards competition.

The competition seeks to honor the best advertising created in Southern Arizona for any media; electronic, print, out-of-home and public service. To qualify, the advertising must air or be published between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 this year.

The deadline to get entries in is noon Dec. 3, to Steven Meckler Photography Studio, 121 S. Fourth Ave. But this being advertising, late entries will be accepted until noon Dec. 10 for an addition $20 fee.

Entry details and fees are online at www.tucsonadfed.org.

The awards will be handed out at a dinner gala Feb. 21 at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort, 10000 N. Oracle Road, Oro Valley.

Names in news

At KVOA 4, Dan Joseph has rejoined the staff as weekend sports reporter. That means sports director Ryan Recker is back to a Monday-through-Friday work week. KVOA had been without a weekend sports reporter since Jay Campbell got out of the business in September. Campbell had been doing the job only since April after Lacee Collins left for Fox Sports Net Arizona.

Johnjay Van Es and Rich Berra, who started their “Johnjay and Rich” morning show seven years ago on KRQ 93.7-FM on Nov. 13 expanded into their fifth market, Fort Collins-Greeley, Colo. Their show also airs in Phoenix, Portland, Ore., and Colorado Springs.
