Inflation doesn’t eat Thanksgiving dinnerGiven that average food prices are up 6.3 percent in the last 12 months, Arizonans can be thankful the cost of the Thanksgiving dinner of turkey and trimmings has gone up just 3.3 percent, according to the Arizona Farm Bureau.
And that was calculated on the cost of a 16-pound turkey at $1.49 per pound. That may be the normal cost but have you seen what Albertsons, Bashas’, Fry’s and Safeway are selling turkeys for this week? Just 45 cents a pound.
The Farm Bureau’s calculation puts the cost for the dinner at $52.81 for 10 people, up from $51.14 last year. Besides the turkey ($23.84) it includes three pounds of sweet potatoes ($4.71), a 16-ounce package of frozen green peas ($1.56), a gallon of whole milk ($3.19), a half-pint of whipping cream ($2.12), two nine-inch pie shells ($2.67), a 12-ounce package of fresh cranberries ($2.54), 14-ounce package of cubed stuffing ($2.79), 30-ounce can of pumpkin pie mix ($3.01), onions, eggs, sugar, flour, evaporated milk, butter and coffee ($3.28), one-half pound each of carrots and celery for a relish tray ($1.11), and a 12-ounce package of brown-and-serve rolls ($1.99).
The Thanksgiving dinner this year costs less than the same meal did 20 years ago, when accounting for inflation.
