Elections
The Executive Women International Tucson Chapter elected its 2008-2009 officers. Those elected are Michelle Matthews, president; Jeannie Nguyen, vice president; Nancy Schlegel, treasurer and Nancy Stephan, secretary.
Mark Neihart, City of Tucson procurement director, was elected president of the National Purchasing Institute. Neihart has more than 21 years of government procurement experience at the City of Tucson and the State of Arizona. Kathleen Bender, City of Tucson procurement contract administrator, was re-elected to a second term on the Board of Directors for the Institute.
The Southern Arizona Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America selected its officers for the 2009 calendar year. Those elected are: Angela Hagen, president; Lynn Perez-Hewitt, president-elect; Cindy Klein, secretary; Mark Dalessandro, treasurer and Mary Davis, immediate past president.
Awards, honors, and recognitions
Earl Wettstein was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the Scottsdale Artists’ School by the Friends of Western Art organization. The scholarship is named for and funded by renowned Tucson artist/author Harley Brown. Wettstein is best known for his colorful, off-beat paintings of Tucson landmarks. Prior to becoming a full-time painter and sculptor, Wettstein was owner and creative director of one of Tucson’s first advertising agencies from 1961 to 1996.
Babette Talkington, director of nursing at La Rosa HealthCare Center, Santa Catalina Villas received the Arizona Health Care Association 2008 Nurse of the Year Award. Talkington has worked in the long term care profession since 1987 and at La Rosa HealthCare Center for the last 5 years.
Six attorneys from Quarles & Brady LLP have been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2009. Those selected are: Susan G. Boswell, antitrust law and commercial litigation; Craig H Kaufman, commercial litigation; James F. Morrow, banking law and real estate law; Nicholas W. O’Keeffe, banking law; Luis A. Ochoa, gaming law - Native American law and Stephen T. Portell, product liability litigation.
The University of Arizona Alumni Association honored five current or former UA College of Pharmacy faculty members. Alumnus Kevin Boesen and professor Michael Mayersohn each received Extraordinary Faculty Awards. Alumnus Robert Dorr received the Distinguished Professional Achievement Award for his work in treating pancreatic cancer. Alumnus David Lee received the Bear Down Award for his contributions as a pharmacist, teacher and mentor. Tucsonan Albert Picchioni was named a UA Honorary Alumnus by the Alumni Association. The professor emeritus started the volunteer effort in poison prevention and toxicology service by College of Pharmacy faculty that later became the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center.
Appointments
Medipacs Inc. appointed David Swenson and Agustin Vilches to the company’s medical Advisory Board. Both Swenson and Vilches have pharmacy backgrounds and together have practiced in Hospital, Hospice and Home care settings.
The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain appointed Mary O’Connor as sales manager. O’Connor most recently served as senior sales manager for Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort, where she began as the executive meetings manager in 2006.
Promotions
Gabriel Noriega is the new marketing director for Cadden Community Management. Gabe comes from a sales and marketing background, he was previously working in the capacity of association manager with Cadden.
