One airline option to Mexico is gone

Forget trying to persuade Alma de Mexico to fill the void for airline service from Tucson into Mexico. The once rapidly growing airline has shut down.

Alma de Mexico, officially Aerolíneas Mesoamericanas, was essentially a low-cost Mexican version of ExpressJet, using regional jets.

Tucson officials, who met with Alma de Mexico executives last summer in Guadalajara, came back optimistically hoping the airline’s expansion plans into the United States would include Tucson. Instead the airline suddenly ceased operations Nov. 7 and has been unable to resume. The airline served 18 destinations in Mexico.

Phoenix loses, too

While we’re on the subject, Tucson isn’t alone in losing airline service to Mexico. As of Jan. 12, Aeroméxico is dropping its daily non-stop flights from Phoenix to Mexico City. Instead, the flight will make one stop each way, in Hermosillo, Sonora.

The airline’s regional subsidiary, Aeroméxico Connect, dropped its service from Tucson to Hermosillo as of Oct. 1.
