State budget deficit still growing; could reach $4.5B

As lawmakers gather in Phoenix this week to open this year’s legislative session, they are being hit with revised estimates that Arizona’s budget deficits for both the current and next fiscal years could soon reach $4.5 billion.

For this fiscal year, which runs to June 30, the shortfall currently stands at $1.2 billion but is expected to be revised upward with new figures due later this month.

Next fiscal year’s budget deficit could be as much as $3 billion.
