UA launches new program for clinical laboratory scientists

Published on Thursday, April 30, 2009

In response to a nationwide shortage of qualified clinical laboratory scientists, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the University of Arizona and the Department of Pathology at the UA College of Medicine have teamed with University Medical Center to create the UA Clinical Laboratory Science Program at the Arizona Health Sciences Center.

Clinical laboratory scientists, or medical technologists, work within the health-care system providing diagnostic laboratory testing. More than 80 percent of medical diagnoses are based on test results generated by clinical laboratory scientists.

The UA Clinical Laboratory Science Program was launched April 19. Typical starting salaries in Arizona for clinical laboratory scientist is $42,000 per year.

The UA program integrates an undergraduate bachelor of arts in biochemistry with the distance learning program clinical laboratory science at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. UA students majoring in biochemistry can take the North Dakota clinical laboratory science courses online as electives and receive training in Tucson’s University Medical Center clinical laboratories.

Upon completion of the program, students qualify for clinical laboratory board certification.
