By a 15-to-14 vote, the state Senate June 22 defeated a bill that would have required hands-free device to use a cell phone while driving and outlawed all texting while driving.

State Sen. Al Melvin, R-Tucson, the bill’s main sponsor said he would like to try to bring back a similar measure next year.

Proponents of such bans cite their need for safety reasons. Opponents said there are already laws on the books covering distracted and negligent driving and that this measure was only another government restriction to further infringe on civil liberties.
