Armando Contreras has been selected as the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s new president and CEO. Contreras previously served under former Governor Napolitano as the Director of the Registrar of Contractors and has extensive experience in both business and government practice. Mr. Contreras also held the position of the Executive Director of the Governor’s Council on Small Business and was designated the Arizona Small Business Advocate.
Mary Wildner-Bassett is the UA College of Humanities’ new dean. She has spent nearly one year as interim dean. Wildner-Bassett, a UA faculty member since 1986 and interim dean since July, has been credited with enhancing the college’s interdisciplinary efforts with numerous units on campus.

Ronald S. Weinstein and Elizabeth Krupinski with the Arizona Telemedicine Program at The University of Arizona College of Medicine, have been inducted into the inaugural class of the American Telemedicine Association College of Fellows. They are among a group of only 11 national leaders named to the ATA College of Fellows. Induction is an honor that recognizes significant achievements in telemedicine, service to the general telemedicine community and service to ATA. Weinstein is director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program, UA professor of pathology and public health, and Arizona State University professor of biomedical informatics. Krupinski is associate director of evaluation and assessment for ATP and UA professor of radiology, public health and psychology.
Mike Kaczmarski has been appointed IBM Fellow for the significant impact he has had in Tivoli and IBM as a whole – particularly in the development of innovative software storage products, integration of the Tivoli portfolio and collaboration across organizational boundaries. He is the lead architect and principal author of the component integration strategy that serves as the blueprint for integrating Tivoli products within service and systems management. He is an acknowledged IBM expert in storage management as one of the original creators of the Tivoli Storage Manager product family, and also led the redesign of the TotalStorage Productivity Center. He is one of eight IBM employees worldwide to receive this honor.
Chia-Ling Hsu, landscape designer with Novak Environmental Inc., landscape architects and planners, has become a LEED Accredited Professional by passing the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED accreditation exam. Hsu is the first employee with NE, Inc. to become a LEED AP. She has been with Novak Environmental, Inc. for over two years.
University of Arizona Philosophy Professor Richard Healey won the 2008 Lakatos Award for his book, “Gauging What’s Real: The Conceptual Foundations of Gauge Theories” (Oxford University Press, 2007). The Lakatos Award, recognized as one of the premier awards in the philosophy of science, is endowed by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland. It goes to the author of an English-language book on the philosophy of science published during the previous five years. Healey also received a grant for $118,990 from the National Science Foundation Division of Social and Economic Sciences to support his project, “Physics Without Building Blocks.”
Interior Designer Monica Rios with Aviar Commercial Space Planning & Design Inc. passed the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED accreditation examination, and is now a LEED Accredited Professional. The accreditation acknowledges a design professional’s thorough understanding of sustainable design principles. Rios is the first Aviar Design staff member to become LEED accredited. She has been with the company for three years.
Y. Arturo Coppola, a partner with Esquema Architecture, obtained his Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design professional accreditation.
New Hires
Sandra Um joined UApresents as director of development. She joins the company from Arizona Theatre Company where she was the associate director of development. Previously, she held development positions at the Tucson Museum of Art and Planned Parenthood.
Advanced Test Equipment hired Michael Kessler to the business development team for the state of Arizona. Kessler brings more than 11 years of experience to his position. Prior to Advanced Test Equipment, Kessler worked in the test equipment arena on both the private and military sectors.
Elections
The YMCA of Southern Arizona elected its new officers and members. The officers will serve two-year terms beginning in July. Those elected are: Peter Beahan, chair; Peter Douglas, vice chair; Kevin Burnett, secretary and Don Jenks, treasurer. Incoming members elected to three-year terms include: Robert McGlynn, Lea Marquez Peterson, Maricela Solis de Kester, Jeff Cesare and Melissa Vito.
