Buffalo Exchange president wins entrepreneur of the year award

Rod Pace is the new president and chief executive officer of Rosemont Copper Company. He has served as vice president of operations and general manager for Rosemont since 2005. Before joining Rosemont, Pace oversaw the startup of mining operations for Washington Group International’s Mining Group as their vice president of North American operations.

Odette Bolano is the new CEO of Tucson Heart Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Bolano brings nearly two decades of senior leadership experience in both nonprofit and for-profit healthcare environments, most recently in a Catholic, faith-based health system. She joined Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital as chief operating officer in 2005 and was appointed chief executive officer in 2007. Previously, she served as chief executive officer of the 232-bed Doctors Hospital of Dallas in Texas.

Appointments

Mark J. Lister and John F. Levy were appointed as Class I Directors of Applied Energetics. The appointments increased the number of directors on the board to six. Lister was appointed as a member of the Compensation Committee and Levy was appointed as a member of the Audit Committee.

Awards, honors, and recognitions

Ernst & Young LLP named Kerstin Block, president and co-owner of Buffalo Exchange, as a 2009 Regional Entrepreneur of the Year, Retail/Consumer Products category. She is the only female recipient and the only Tucson business owner out of seven winners in the Orange County/Desert Cities region. Awards are given to entrepreneurs who demonstrate extraordinary success in the areas of innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities. Winners were selected by an independent judging panel of regional business and community leaders.

Fayez K. Ghishan, professor and head of The University of Arizona Department of Pediatrics and director of the UA Steele Children’s Research Center, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Achievement from the University Of Iowa Carver College Of Medicine. The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor the college bestows upon its graduates, recognizing those who have transcended their fundamental roles as health-care providers, scientists and educators to become leaders in the advancement of medicine.

Katrina Ledy of Herschman Architects Inc. passed the Architect Registration Examination and the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED accreditation examination.

Marc Simon, an attorney with Snell & Wilmer L.L.P., has been recognized as a leader in the area of Real Estate - Zoning/Land Use by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2009. These rankings are driven by independent interviews of clients and members of the legal community.

Marcheta Gillespie, Deputy Director and Cherie Odeski, Senior Contract Officer of the department of procurement for the City of Tucson have received Manager of the Year and Buyer of the Year awards respectively from the Copper Chapter of the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing Inc. Gillespie has been with City Procurement for more than 18 years. Odeski has been with the City for one year and has more than nine years of public procurement experience.

New Hires

Douglas Wingert joined New England Financial as a financial services representative following his retirement from a Tucson banking career spanning the last 35 years. Wingert offers securities, mutual funds, annuities, life, health, and disability insurance products and general information and advice regarding these products. 

Laurie Robinson is the new wellness and health promotion manager for the El Rio Community Health Center. Prior to joining El Rio, she served for the last ten year as the Region I Women’s Health Coordinator for the Office on Women’s Health within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services working with the six New England states.
