Key Spring Training bill gets lawmakers' approval

Published on Monday, July 06, 2009

A bill that would give a Pima County Sports and Tourism Authority, the ability to levy taxes — after they’re  approved by voters — cleared the state Senate in the waning hours of the Legislative session last week. The measure had been approved in mid-June by the state House of Representatives.

Once signed by Gov. Jan Brewer, the bill requires an election in Pima County to impose a series of tax increases on such things as rental cars, hotels and restaurant meals in order to raise money to build sports facilities that could be used for local events and to attract a professional baseball team to Spring Train in the region.
