Lawmakers OK bill to change Tucson elections
Published on Monday, July 06, 2009
A bill requiring the City of Tucson to do away with partisan elections for city council and mayor and require them to win elections only within their wards was approved in the final hours of this year’s regular session.
The bill (SB 1123) was sponsored by Rep. Jonathon Paton, R-Tucson, and although it requires all municipalities to follow the same procedures it only affects Tucson because it is the only municipality in the state with partisan elections.
DEA issues apology for unemployment miscalculation
The Arizona Department of Economic Security has issued a mea culpa to those on unemployment for a miscalculation it made. From November 2008 to April 2009, the agency mistakenly sent out notices that people who had already exhausted their regular 26 weeks of unemployment benefits were entitled to receive 13 extra weeks of compensation through money from the federal stimulus plan. Those claimants are entitled to receive an additional 20 weeks of benefits.
DEA has sent corrected notices to 23,000 claimants. Those with questions can get more information by calling 1-877-877-6226.
