6 of 8 stimulus road projects out to bid

Six federal stimulus road projects in Pima County worth about $36 million are in the bidding process while two others worth $10.6 million are lagging.
Statewide, more than $39 million in contracts have been awarded for 13 road projects using stimulus money, and 20 more are in the bidding stage, according to a breakdown of the $350 million in transportation stimulus projects from the Arizona Department of Transportation. Five projects are still not to the bidding stage.
The two Pima County projects in limbo are a $9.1 million freeway management system for Interstate 10, from I-19 to Valencia Road and $1.5 million to replace the signage on I-19 from Tucson to Nogales.
The signage project was put on hold by Gov. Jan Brewer’s office after objections arose to the plan to change the signs from kilometers to miles. The freeway is one of only two interstate in the country that are currently marked in kilometers.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the road projects in Pima County that are currently in the bidding process are:
• I-10, pavement preservation from Rita Road to Houghton Road, $6 million
• I-10, interchange reconstruction at Marsh Station, $18 million
• State Route 86, rehabilitation of bridge deck over Santa Cruz River, $200,000
• SR 86, shoulder widening from milepost 73.9 to 74.9 and 76.6 to 77.4, $3.3 million
• SR 86, pavement preservation from Kinney Road to La Cholla Boulevard, $3.5 million
• SR 86, roadway widening of the Brawley Wash segment, $5 million
