Two UA researchers get published in Scientific American Mind

New Hires

Tun Jie, MD, joined the University of Arizona Department of Surgery and the abdominal transplant team at University Medical Center. Dr. Jie specializes in abdominal organ transplant and liver, pancreas and biliary surgery. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award and the David Gaviser Surgical Research Award from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.

The Metropolitan Tucson Convention & Visitors Bureau hired Graeme Hunt to be the webmaster for the organization. Prior to joining the MTCVB team, Hunt worked for Kaneen Advertising and Public Relations, The American Public Works Association, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Donna Beedy is the new manager and designated broker for the Nogales/Rio Rico Long Realty office. Beedy has been a successful Realtor in Tubac and Rio Rico for many years and was previously an associate broker with The Harrison Group in Tubac. Along with Beedy, experienced agents have joined the Long Realty office including: Cristina Carrillo, Colleen Thompsen and Lupita Munguia.

Regier Carr & Monroe hired two new employees for its office: Christopher Coots and Myrna Lopez. Coots joins the firm as a senior tax manager specializing in planning and compliance in the areas of corporate, partnership, individual, estate and trust taxation. He has more than 16 years of experience in tax planning and compliance. Lopez joins the firm as a staff accountant responsible for preparing income tax returns as well as tax compliance and planning.

Awards, honors, and recognitions

Bruce Jones, of LRD Architects, passed the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED exam and is now a LEED Accredited Professional.

Researchers Frank Porreca and Theodore Price with The University of Arizona’s Pain Research Group in the College of Medicine Department of Pharmacology had their article, “When Pain Lingers” published in the current edition of Scientific American Mind. Porreca is a professor of pharmacology and anesthesiology and Price is an assistant professor of pharmacology. The two explore the chronic pain puzzle.

Salvatore Albani, MD, director of the Arizona Arthritis Center, had his article titled “The Advancement of Translational Medicine – From Regional Challenges to Global Solutions,” published in the September issue of Nature Medicine. He co-authored the article with Berent Prakken of the Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands. The article offers suggestions for maximizing translational research in academia, industry and government worldwide.

Jeffrey H. Jacobson, Esq., of Jacobson & Larrabee, P.L.L.C., has earned an AV Preeminent peer review rating from the Martindale-Hubbell, a legal guide, in recognition of his legal skills and professional ethics. 

Appointments

Debbie Chandler, executive director of the Microbusiness Advancement Center, has been appointed to the City of Tucson Small Business Commission. 

Elections

Carla J. Keegan, president and director of Tax of Keegan, Linscott & Kenon, P.C., has been elected the 2010 vice chair for the Angel Charity for Children, Inc. The organization is a volunteer, non-profit organization that raises money to improve the lives of children.



New Launches

Manas Jain joined the medical staff of Oro Valley Hospital and Northwest Medical Center. Jain is a urologist and his areas of particular interest include erectile dysfunction, incontinence, prostate health and prostate surgery and robotic surgery.  He is a member of the American Urological Association.
