Symington backs Tucsonan John Munger for governor

Published on Friday, October 16, 2009

Former Gov. Fife Symington has decided against pursuing a bid to run for governor next year and instead has announced his support for Tucson attorney John Munger. Both Symington and Munger are Republicans.

“John’s a leader. As a successful businessman, he brings an outsider’s perspective to the state’s top office,” Symington said in a statement released by Munger’s campaign. “The next governor has to lead this state during difficult economic times. John Munger’s approach is the right approach. Lighten the load on businesses and families. Cut taxes. Reshape and reform government. It’s clear to me this is what the state needs and it’s clear to me that John’s the guy.”

Symington had been critical of Gov. Jan Brewer, also a Republican, who has not yet announced whether she will seek election. She became governor in January, elevated from Secretary of State, after former Gov. Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, joined the Obama Administration as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

" Symington is morally bankrupt. Is that any kind of endorsement?

John Munger represents Tucson Greyhound Park a controversial venue that doesn't pay state taxes, gets a hardship tax credit at the tax payer's expense, and now doses dogs with steroids even though the voters recently approved an ordinance against it.

I'm all for another Republican holding down the capitol fort, just not Munger. "
