Republicans denied claims leveled at them by Democrats that Proposition 200, the Public Safety First Initiative, was put on Tucson city ballots to try to get more law-and-order voters to cast ballots but they can’t deny the effort may have helped them.

Maybe it didn’t get more Republicans to the polls but it got Democrats preoccupied with defeating the measure — so much so it diverted attention away from their own candidates’ efforts to win city council seats.     

Many supporters of Proposition 200 acknowledged that the sledgehammer approach used by opponents was overkill. It was more important to them to have a strong showing for the right candidates who would make the right decisions. In that regard, they succeeded.
