Republicans are enthusiastic over Tucson election results and future

As Pima County Elections workers continued tabulating ballots from the Nov. 3 election, hoping they could be finished before the weekend, the outcomes of some races were put in doubt while other outcomes showed strengthening trends.

In races for the Tucson City Council, Republican challengers gained ground in later tabulation reports as Steve Kozachik’s margin over incumbent Nina Trasoff widened in Ward 6 and Ben Buehler-Garcia narrowed his gap behind incumbent Karin Uhlich in Ward 3 to less than 250 votes.

The one council race that seemed not in doubt was Richard Fimbres’ victory in Ward 5. Fimbres will fill the seat being vacated by fellow Democrat Steve Leal.

Among other issues, Proposition 200, the controversial Public Safety First initiative, was also soundly defeated, rejected by more than 70 percent of the votes. Leaders of the effort conceded defeat on election night.

Proposition 200 would have amended the city charter to set minimum staffing levels for police officers and minimum response times for emergency calls. The proponents had gathered a record 18,000 signatures on petitions last summer to put the measure on the ballot. Both supporters and opponents of the measure say polling data indicated as recently as six weeks ago that it had strong support, which prompted opponents to mount a concerted effort to defeat it.

Voters in Tucson Unified School District rejected the district’s third attempt in five years to get permission to raise taxes and increase spending limits on its operations and capital budgets. And, probably owing to the economy, this year’s defeat of the maintenance and operations override by more than 58 percent was the widest margin yet. Five years ago, it was voted down by 57 percent of voters and last year it was rejected by 52 percent of voters.

Among school districts that asked voters to approve additional spending measures, Catalina Foothills, Tanque Verde and Indian Oasis-Baboquivari sold their cases to voters.

But it was a mixed case in two other districts. Voters in the Vail and Sahuarita unified school districts favored proposals to sell bonds for school facilities improvements but rejected the idea of allowing the districts to continue exceeding state-set limitations on their operations budgets.

The strong showing by Republicans was evident election night as close to 300 people celebrated.

Pima County Republican Chairman Bob Westerman hosted the gathering with attendees including State Party Chairman Randy Pullen, businessman Jim Click, several state and local legislators and the city council candidates.

State Rep. Jonathan Paton, R-Tucson, said that some of the biggest Tea Party turnouts in the state have been in Southern Arizona showing the frustration with Democrats.

“I’ve not seen this type of energy in our party in one room at one time ever before,” said Jesse Kelly, who is an announced Republican candidate Congressional District 8. “Younger people are getting involved to help take back their government.”

Click said the results were “the start of something real exciting. Hold your heads up high, next fall there is a Board of Supervisors race, the governor and (congressional) races.”

Rick Grinnell, who founded his consulting firm Smart United Business Strategies (SUBS) this year, noted, “There’s more young people here because for the first time in their lives, they feel vulnerable. They’re feeling the tax pressures that our generation has felt. There is no security right now and fear has a tendency to lead to change.  This election may not change the way we do business in Tucson, but I’m excited about the next generation.”

" It wasn't Click's money that was behind Kosachik. I'm not sure exactly but, I think Click got a big fat goose egg for his trouble. Kosachik is a good guy and ran a great campaign. "

" Hmm ok. Jim Click only had a 25% return on his money despite all the efforts and got one new vote out of the Council. Not sure Rick Grinnel hardly seems like a spokesman for the younger generation either. Sounds more like a long shot, do-able but nowhere near as easy indicated. "

" Gabby will soon find she has very little support amongst a growing population of returning soldiers, retired service men and women, whom her office does NOTHING to help. Pima county is home to a great many retired military, generally conservative. One thing we don't do? We don't vote for people or parties who flat out LIED in news clipping/TV SPOT to get elected and then 1/4 of a Presidential and Congressional Term have our families across the country HUNGRY; then "Bring US HOME FROM WAR. "

" Hey Bobby – er... potty mouth Bobster. I can feel your pain man and see that you’re at a loss for words, but dude, you need to get out more often. Maybe it’s time to like, tell yer Mom that you’re gonna get your own place – maybe even a job.

Word on the street is (well maybe not 4th Avenue), you can stick a fork in Giffords – she’s done. As for Goddard, naaah. I think Nobama's eloquent "wee-weed" comment about covers it. Thank goodness he grabbed that sweet catch Napalitano before she could do Arizona any more harm .
Mmmm, Mmmm, Mmmm! "

" Neither Jesse Kelly nor any other Party of No "person" has a snowballs chance. If Gabby wants the job it is hers. As to our next Gov., it will be Terry Goddard.

Blood in the water? Thats Republicunts spewing voters over to the Democratic side. "

RyeR wrote on Nov 6, 2009 7:16 PM:

" NOPaDOP - you seem like a nice person so I'm going to help you out with the definition of a Blue Dog Democrat. They used to be called Yellow Dog Democrats. You can certainly appreciate the change of color. Essentially, they are an unprincipaled political class created to appreal to an unprincipaled voting class - the Moderate. When campaigning they pretend to be more "conservative" dems but when they go to Washington, they drop all pretenses. "

RyeR wrote on Nov 6, 2009 6:04 PM:

" Hey NOPaDOP - Did I call that or what??? You Giffords lovers are so transparent. Smell the blood in the water buddy? We do. Giffords and the dems are bleeding out at the polls for supporting NoBama's Socialists policies. Stick around, it's going to be fun.

Jesse's a what? RINO you say? Kinda like Giffords being a Blue Dog? No evidence and no chance of either my friend. . "

Kelly NOP wrote on Nov 6, 2009 5:39 PM:

" Sounds like he's a member of the me, myself and I party.

Kelly is a RINO.

Giffords will crush him. "

RyeR wrote on Nov 6, 2009 4:39 PM:

" First, in the last election, not many in our party were enthusiastic. Remember, McCain was our candidate. You voted for Obama so why are you concerned about when Jesse became a Republican?

Secondly, Jesse Kelly is a Marine and has spent the last few years serving in Iraq. You failed to mention that fact. But why would you - you voted for Obama and Giffords is your kind of gal.

Yep, thank goodness Jesse spent his time and money getting his campaign off the ground. He's now ahead of the pack and will beat Giffords like a red headed step child come November 2010. "

Kelly NOP wrote on Nov 6, 2009 3:45 PM:

" The reason Jesse Kelly has not seen the enthusiasm in the Republican Party is that he wasn't in the Republican Party until recently. Kelly has never donated time or money to any other candidate except for himself. "
