Enterprise Rent-A-Car announced July 27 it is buying 500 electric battery-powered Nissan Leaf cars to put in Tucson and seven other locations starting in January.
Nissan had previously announced that Tucson and Phoenix will be among the first markets in the country where the electric vehicles will be available for sale late this year. The company says it already has about 17,000 orders for Leafs in the United States. Nissan will continue with full nationwide availability in 2012.
Enterprise said the Leaf, which can run up to 100 miles on a full charge, will be available for rent at its locations in Tucson, Phoenix, San Diego, Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., Seattle, and Knoxville and Nashville, Tenn.
Arizona, California, Washington, Oregon and Tennessee are states that have received $99.8 million in federal stimulus money as part of a project to install both commercial and residential vehicle charging stations. Included in that is a plan to install charging stations along Interstate 10 between Tucson and Phoenix making it the first such charged interstate corridor in the country.
